The Great Cruise Overpacking Epidemic: Why We All Do It (and How to Stop)

If you’ve ever packed for a cruise and thought, “I might need this… and this… and maybe three extra outfits just in case,” you’re not alone. Cruise overpacking is practically a rite of passage. Something about being in the middle of the ocean convinces us we’ll suddenly need our entire wardrobe, five pairs of shoes, and a backup outfit for the backup outfit.

But here’s the truth: cruises are one of the easiest vacations to pack light for—and yet somehow the hardest to resist overstuffing the suitcase.

Why We Overpack for Cruises

  • Theme nights make us think we need a full costume closet to pull that stunning outfit that blow away strangers.
  • Unpredictable weather has us packing for all four seasons. Unless you are on a four-season cruise (which I have been on and will be going on again this year), pack smarter, not more.
  • “What if” syndrome kicks in hard when you’re miles from shore and all of a sudden you pack everything but the kitchen sink.
  • So many photo ops that we convince ourselves we can’t repeat an outfit.

What You Actually Need

  • Comfortable daytime clothes
  • A couple of dinner outfits
  • Swimwear (yes, you can re-wear it)
  • One light layer for breezy nights
  • Shoes you’ll actually walk in

Everything else? Optional at best.

What You Can Skip

  • Half your shoe collection
  • A different outfit for every dinner
  • Full-size toiletries (the ship has plenty), unless you have special needs that require special attention.
  • “Just in case” items you haven’t used on land in years

The Secret No One Tells You

Cruises are casual. Truly. No one is judging your outfit repeats. Most people are too busy enjoying the sun, the food, and the excursions to notice what you’re wearing.

So next time you’re packing, take a deep breath, remove half of what’s in your suitcase, and remind yourself: you’re going on vacation, not moving onto the ship.

Bon voyage—and may your suitcase finally zip on the first try.
